The last depot closed in and was torn down for its lumber. The town hung on for another 7 years. The last business was the Mercantile, eking out a living as a gas station and country store. The elderly Heney sisters, whose family bought the Mercantile in its heyday in , left in to live with relatives. At that time Fairbank officially became a ghost town.
Today, the trains are gone but if you listen closely at night in Fairbank, you might hear the echo of a steam whistle. Visiting Fairbank Would you like to visit? The remains of a trestle near Fairbank. The second involved building two seven-storey buildings on the south side, either side of Chatham Place, on the site of a former pub used as the Pringle knitwear factory outlet and an s gravel pit chapel in use by Aquascutum. However, this key chunk of the project was never built. Once built, one of these became the Nike building while the other was never let.

The scheme had plenty of critics. There was also concerns over the lack of joined-up thinking behind the designs. The fashion hub opened in in the Adjaye-refurbed arches and PRS-designed infill units with a range of outlet stores for high-end brands such as Zadig and Voltaire, Gieves and Hawkes, luxury cashmere brand Colombo, Nicole Farhi, and Matches. But one by one the retailers have dropped out until today just four of 12 remain: Nike, Present, Matches and Joseph.
The Hackney Gazette reported that the Present menswear store had been boarded up after being ram-raided twice.
When asked by the AJ why they moved on, most of the retailers declined to comment publicly. I hoped they would make it a great success.
I would love it to be busier and full of retailers. You know what the retail environment is at the moment, it takes time. I believe Hackney Central has great potential going forward and the scheme will evolve over time. There are already plans in place to repurpose the fashion hub into a wider range of uses.

Industry Professional 28 October, am. No discussion here of the absolute disaster that is the siting of the two PRS buildings. They left so little pavement that the road had to be narrowed to accommodate them, leaving no space for cycle lanes, and still there's only just enough room for two people to pass.
They block off the public realm created by the Adjaye scheme from the rest of the area. They offer no active frontage onto the street. How they got through planning is a mystery. They're a total disaster, eyesores that should be demolished immediately to properly open up the area and link to the forthcoming and very exciting Adam Khan housing and to Homerton High Street.dockdine.com/907.php

This junction organically became a retail centre with fashion brands opening outlets and regenerating the buildings on site - Pringle is currently in the large attractive Victorian former pub Duke of Wellington and several of these attractive buildings would have been demolished to make way for the blocks with totally generic retail offerings on the ground floor. It's lucky the later stage of the project hasn't been completed as the buildings there are what make these urban areas interesting and worth visiting and ironically the old buildings proposed for demolition are all tenanted - what does that say about the kind of streets and shops people want to visit and spend money in?
